CEBU, Philippines – The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) unveiled a new logo on Friday, March 7 — and many social media users laughed about it.

The MIAA released its new logo and brand identity as part of its 43rd anniversary celebration, the agency said in its press release

“The unveiling of our new identity is a significant step in our journey towards becoming a regulatory authority that prioritizes safety, efficiency, and innovation,” said MIAA General Manager Eric Jose Ines. “This transformation aligns with our mission to guide and oversee the operations at NAIA while ensuring that the highest standards of aviation are met.”

The logo also comes as MIAA transitions to a new role, from operator of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to its regulator. Operations and maintenance of the country’s main gateway were transferred to the New NAIA Infra Corporation, led by San Miguel Corporation, in September 2024.

School project?

The latest profile picture of MIAA’s Facebook page, featuring the latest logo, has garnered more than 23,000 reactions — at least 17,000 of which were “Haha” — as of writing.

Many Facebook users thought the new MIAA logo was a “downgrade” from the old one, with some poking fun at it and calling it a “school project.”

Some users also pointed out the similarities of the new MIAA logo to a stock image they found online, which has apparently been used in older logos.

Other users, meanwhile, offered constructive criticism about the usability of the logo design.

Some even went out of their way to create alternative versions of the MIAA logo.

Facebook user Christian San Jose, who said he participated in a logo-making contest organized by the MIAA in 2023 and allegedly won first place, questioned why his winning design was not used.

This is not the first time the Marcos Jr. administration has come under fire for its rebranding ventures.

In June 2023, the Department of Tourism retired its old “It’s more fun in the Philippines” slogan and launched the new “Love the Philippines”. It drew the ire not just of netizens, but also public relations experts and lawmakers.

The following month, in July 2023, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation launched a highly-criticized new logo worth P3 million. Just days after that, social media users jabbed at the government once again for its “Bagong Pilipinas” logo.
