MANILA, Philippines – Barangay Ginebra star Scottie Thompson said there is more work to do even as he became the youngest member of the PBA 50 Greatest Players.
The 31-year-old guard was among the 10 newest additions, comprised mostly of retired legends like Nelson Asaytono, Yoyoy Villamin, Bong Hawkins, Jeffrey Cariaso, and Danny Seigle.
He and San Miguel ace June Mar Fajardo are the only active players in the list.
“Truly blessed to be given this kind of opportunity in life. We all know not everyone is given this chance,” said Thompson in Filipino on Thursday, April 3, in a press conference by Arena Plus, the sports betting platform he endorses.
“I’m still young in my career. I have to keep working hard. I know there are many more opportunities that will come, not just in basketball, but in life.”
The inclusion of Thompson has been met with mixed reactions from fans, most notably the sentiment that it is too early for the pride of Davao to make the exclusive club.
After all, Thompson is just in his ninth season since the Gin Kings drafted him in 2015.
But Thompson earned the Greatest Player nod as the selection committee — bannered by icons Ramon Fernandez, Allan Caidic, and Atoy Co — followed the tradition of giving MVP winners an automatic slot.
Thompson won MVP in 2021 on top of his other personal accolades, which include two Finals MVP, two Best Player of the Conference, and two Mythical First Team awards.
He is also a seven-time champion with Ginebra.
“Totally shocked. There are many others deserving of the spot, but still, I made it. For me, it is a testament to my hard work,” said Thompson.
“I know how hard I work in life, on the court and off the court. There are a lot who are deserving, but I’m truly blessed to be there.”
Thompson was joined by Gin Kings teammates Justin Brownlee and RJ Abarrientos, who were introduced as new Arena Plus ambassadors. – Rappler.com
