MANILA, Philippines – In October 2024, former president Rodrigo Duterte reneged on his word that he was done with politics and just wanted to retire. He filed his certificate of candidacy for mayor of Davao City, a post he held for a long time before becoming president.
On March 11, around two weeks before his campaign for the local post was to start, he was arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity.
He is now jailed in The Hague and awaiting trial later in 2025 — months after the elections back home.
The big question is: is he still a candidate? And, if yes, what happens if and when he wins?
