‘Shrek The Musical’ is heading to Manila — and they’re looking for stars

MANILA, Philippines – Get ready to head back to the swamp!

The world’s most beloved ogre is stomping his way to Manila as Shrek The Musical premieres in the Newport Performing Arts Theater from October to December 2025 — and they’re looking for cast members!

Newport World Resorts is holding open-call auditions on Saturday, March 29, in Meeting Room 1, 3F, Hilton Manila. Registration runs from 9 am to 12 pm, and auditions will be held from 1 pm to 5 pm.

They are looking for talented performers with strong vocals and dance abilities to fill the major roles of the gruff yet endearing Shrek; the bold and independent Princess Fiona; Donkey, Shrek’s fast-talking, loyal best friend; the pint-sized yet power-hungry Lord Farquaad; fierce yet sultry Dragon; sassy, tough-talking Gingy (The Gingerbread Man); and other quirky fairy tale creatures like Pinocchio, The Big Bad Wolf, and more.

Ensemble members will take on multiple roles, including knights, guards, and villagers.

Those interested in auditioning need to prepare 32 bars of a song from their favorite musical, a minus-one track for playback, and submit a CV, a 3R-sized headshot, and a full-body photo.

Rehearsals will start on August 18, from 2 pm to 9 pm.

Brought to life by Newport World Resorts’ Full House Theater Company, the larger-than-life stage production will be based on William Steig’s book Shrek! and the hit DreamWorks animated film.

The Philippine run will be directed by Michael Williams, with musical staging and choreography by Dexter Santos and music direction by Rony Fortich.

Shrek The Musical brings to life the heartwarming story of a grumpy but lovable ogre, a wise-cracking donkey, and a feisty princess with a surprising secret. With music by Tony-winning composer Jeanine Tesori and a book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire, the Broadway smash hit premiered in 2008.

The original production earned eight Tony Award nominations, winning Best Costume Design, and has been staged in London’s West End, Australia, and other countries. – Rappler.com
