MANILA, Philippines – Former president Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on Tuesday, March 11, by Philippine authorities following the issuance of a warrant by the International Criminal Court (ICC).
This latest development comes almost nine years since the ICC first took notice of the bloodshed happening under Duterte’s violent war on drugs.
Official government data show that 6,252 people were killed in police anti-drug operations alone from the start of the Duterte administration in 2016 until May 2022. Human rights groups estimate the death toll to reach 30,000 to include victims of vigilante-style killings.
The Presidential Communications Office confirmed that the government had received from the Interpol an official copy of a warrant of arrest issued by the ICC against the former president. Upon his arrival from Hong Kong, Duterte was presented by the Philippine government’s Prosecutor General the ICC notification for an arrest over crimes against humanity.
