The following is a press release from the University of the Philippines Press.

The University of the Philippines Press will kick off its 60th anniversary celebration with a mass book launch entitled “Pagmayaw: Paglulunsad ng mga bagong aklat ng UP Press 2024” on March 20, from 2 pm to 5 pm.

Pagmayaw happens at the Atencio-Libunao Hall located at F. Agoncillo Street, UP Campus, Diliman, Quezon City (entrance is across the Parish of the Holy Sacrifice). The event aims to highlight the titles published by the UP Press in 2024.

Pagmayaw: The UP Press Mass book launch 2024

This year’s UP Press book launch, through the theme of Pagmayaw, signals a time for beginnings and endings, as well as an opportunity for healing and thanksgiving.

From the root word mayaw or mayaw-mayaw, the word indicates a ritual performed by a maaram or shaman prior to planting or building, a form of ceremony which offers thanks to a God or gods of nature for their generosity and care. This event is similarly motivated by our gratitude for the authors, editors, translators, artists, and various contributors who have generously shared their craft, expertise, and knowledge to our publications in the past year.

At the same time, we also mark 2025 as the 60th anniversary of the UP Press, further highlighting the significance of this celebration of thanks for all who continue to be of service to our institution, both within and beyond the university.

The theme of Pagmayaw serves to convey a life of bounty partnered with an enduring sense of community — a reminder for us to recognize what we have achieved in the past year at the same time as we prepare for what lies ahead.

Dalayday: Pagsasanga at pagtatagpo ng mga agos

The theme for the UP Press 60th anniversary refers to a branching out as well as movement towards a common goal that mirrors our own history.

From its initial establishment by the UP Board of Regents in 1965, wherein it was tasked to “undertake scholarly publishing in line with the standards set by university presses abroad,” and to “perform and take over the publishing and printing functions” of what was then referred to as the Office of University Publications, the UP Press has clearly adapted through the decades as we collaborate with authors, editors, translators, and artists in bringing to life their creative works, critical studies, and valuable research.

As with the onward current of a tributary toward another body of water, the UP Press has run its course from being an academic publisher, which was once merged with the UP Printery, to its present thriving state, with a stronger focus on projects from various disciplines both within the UP system and also well beyond the university. In extending our reach, we recognize the pressing need to represent works from diverse regions in the Philippines, including those written in and/or translated from Philippine languages. We are also reminded of what lies ahead as we work toward broadening our audience to include more readers throughout the country, across Asia, and even possibly the world.

“Dalayday” thus calls to mind our enduring mandate as an academic publisher that contributes to the production of knowledge and nation building for Filipinos here and across the globe.
