MANILA, Philippines – Last week, America spoke: Republican Donald Trump is their next president. Back here in the Philippines, the question has always been, how will this affect us?
One of the most primary answers to that question is the 4.1 million Filipino Americans who live there. A second administration under Trump is especially relevant if your relatives are among the 200,000 undocumented Filipinos in the US who are at risk of Trump’s mass deportation plan.
But whether legal or illegal, concerns remain about the incoming administration under Trump, who has stood on harsh immigration policies.
In this episode of At Home sa Abroad: Stories of Overseas Filipinos, multimedia reporter Michelle Abad speaks to Jona Hilario, a naturalized Filipino-American immigrant and community organizer based in Ohio, who was almost barred from voting. They talk about the experience of this election and what it means for Jona, her family, and her community moving forward.
